Mobile Car Detailing SEO Case Study

How River Islands Car Salon
Succeeded With SEO

I met Neil in March of 2024, and we immediately kicked it off.

He was struggling with his website’s SEO after multiple unsuccessful attempts at finding the right freelancer to take his website to the next level and get more business from Google.

Like every business owner, he only cared about leads, so I’ll begin the case study by looking at how his lead generation improved, and then move on to other metrics like traffic and others.

This case study will show what was done in just under 3 months of work on SEO (March, April, and May of 2024). Of course, there is always room for improvement, but what we have already managed to achieve is worth showing off.

How Many Calls Did We Generate

What’s the one thing all SEO clients care about the most?

Leads.

So, how many additional leads did we bring to Neil’s mobile car detailing business?

By looking at Google’s call tracking feature, you can see Neil had 12 calls from his Google Business Profile in February. We began SEO work on March 14th.

It’s not fair to take February as a starting point, though, because half of March has also passed before we began this project. That makes the 26 leads he got from GBP our starting point.

What’s the status now, in May? See it yourself. A slight bump in April, and then a spike in May, surpassing March call volume by almost 50%.

If you ask me, a 50% growth in call volume is great in just 2 months.

How Our SEO Campaign Began

I audited Neil’s site on March 12th. We began the work on March 14th.

During the audit, I looked at the following things:

  • Google Analytics data
  • Google Search Console data
  • Google Business Profile Performance data

I used Ahrefs’ Site Audit feature to see technical errors. He had some minor technical issues, all of which we later addressed.

These included:

  • 404 errors
  • Image file size too large
  • 301 redirects in the sitemap
  • Pages has internal links to 301 redirects
  • And others

Many SEOs believe these issues don’t really matter, but they do. And if you take care of them, it will  be easier for Google to crawl and index your site.

The easier you make it for Google to crawl your site, the more they will reward you. It’s that simple.

Major SEO Issues He Was Struggling With

Neil’s site had quite a unique problem.

You see, the backstory to Neil’s site is that it was started in 2021. Since then, he has been experimenting with SEO on his own.

He didn’t hire anybody at the beginning, and his site has actually managed to get good traffic, which he was happy with.

But he wanted more.

And then he decided to get some help and start onboarding some freelancers to assist him. The first freelancer changed his entire site and removed some of his well-performing pages for an unknown reason.

Check the Search Console image on the left (or below if you’re on mobile). You’ll see he was getting around 15-20 visits a day during the time he was DIY-ing and then that traffic immediately dropped off.

It was a mystery to me. A bunch of these pages were just staying in his WordPress dashboard as drafts.

He then hired a backlinking freelancer to help him get back on track. But the links weren’t really an issue here, because the niche overall doesn’t require much linking in general, especially in his area.

How We Addressed These Issues

It was very simple.

I brought the removed pages back.

Neil was unhappy with his site’s overall looks, so I started redesigning and planning on getting the pages back, but now making the URL structure a little bit nicer.

Before, it was:

  • ricarsalon.com/mobile-car-detailing-services-stockton-ca

If you look at it now, the structure is like this:

  • ricarsalon.com/service-areas/stockton-ca

I believe most SEOs will agree with me that this is a good site structure.

Neil also wanted more up-to-date content instead of his old text and images (a bunch of them were stock photos too). He has detailed some pretty nice cars, and he wanted to show those off.

And so I added that too! Not only was his site structured much better, but it also had better sales copy, better on-page SEO (H2s, H3s, and internal linking), and freshly detailed Lambos!

Check the result on the right (or below if you’re on mobile). We doubled the site’s traffic!

There’s still a lot more work to do to get back to those 15-20 visits a day he was getting before.

But add in this result with the fact that his GBP calls grew too, and I believe my monthly fee was well worth the investment for Neil.
